One problem with the data centers is that when they move into a neighborhood, because they use so much power they get special rates and drive up the cost of power for those that live around them. If they build one near you, expect your power bill to at least double.
Tis but a minor inconvenience. You complain too much! Where is your vision? Your capitalist and entrepreneurial spirit? Why aren’t you willing to make a small sacrifice for the greater good, Apple pie and the billionaires pond I scheme? Where is your American Spirit man? We have to beat the Chinese! If none of these things touch you this must: It is for the good of the chilren!

There is a short thread on FR about a 62 sq/mi data center to be built in Box Elder Co. in Utah, and I was also reading an article about who is the Agency behind it MIDA (article linked below).
One thing stood out - it will use twice the electricity that the entire State of Utah uses.

THERE ARE WAYS TO ADD POWER.
WATER IS AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT ISSUE.
I LIVE ON AN AQUIFER INN HIGH DESERT N NEVADA.
OUR WATER IS LIMITED.
EACH PARCEL WE LIVE ON IS ALLOWED 2.2 ACRE FEET OF WATER A YEAR. AN ACRE FOOT OF WATER===43,560 SQ FEET X 1 FOOT DEEP IN WATER. THAT IS 325,851 GALLONS OF WATER....A YEAR...FOR OUR RESIDENTIAL /AG PARCEL.
OUR ANNUAL RAINFALL==ABOUT 4 1/2 INCHES A YEAR.
THE NEW DATA CENTER HAS BEEN AWARDED 20 ACRE FEET-—ABOUT 9 TIMES A NORMAL PARCEL. NOTHING IS METERED.
