I never said they were, only that slavery was well established in the original colonies and the fledgling states before the purchase. The fact that the Spanish, French, Dutch, and Portuguese colonies ALL made use of African slaves, with the eager cooperation of the African slave traders, shows that it was NOT a "peculiar" institution at the time. The Portuguese were the big dog in slave employment, making the U.S. look like a bunch of Quakers by comparison.

Virginia and Georgia were not acquisition points of the Louisiana Purchase. Perhaps it would result in a more complete picture if you asked Grok for a timeline of slavery in North America. Prior to 1803, British and French colonial policies covered two different portions of the continent.
