Yesterday, the Kentucky Oaks (for fillies) was actually run under lights for the first time.

50 years ago start time was around 4:30-5pm ET.

Today’s Derby is the 12th and final race of the day.

Strictly a marketing decision to draw the biggest audience, aka peak viewership time..
