Why would he think it was a "clever political thing"? How would he think just seeing numbers "47" preceded by "86" was a "clever political thing"? If he didn't know, "86" might well mean something positive for "47".

It is infantile thinking that the former head of the FBI did not realize that "86" had a negative, violent connotation.

He knew what that meant because he created it, his denials not holding water.

You’re 100% right. It could have been some celebrations taking place on the beach for birthdays or anniversaries - anything!! No way did he NOT KNOW!
