Rural America has long been where the rest of the country sends what it doesn’t want nearby: prisons, power plants, landfills. These days, two more intrusions have been added to the list: immigrant detention centers and data centers.
In December, Larry Bender, the supervisor of Tremont Township in Schuylkill County, Pa., learned to his great surprise that the federal government had purchased the largest commercial property in the township: a 1.3-million-square-foot warehouse that had been a Big Lots distribution center. It would now be used for immigrant detention.
Tremont is home to about 300 people. The facility was designated for up to 7,500 detainees. Given the social, economic and environmental impact, you might think the government would have provided residents and public officials with advance notice. But the deed was recorded before Mr. Bender said he even knew a sale was in the works.

Agreed - all we have to do is look at what the kooks in charge are doing in the UK.
I am 1000% in favor of these alien detention centers.
Ridiculous handwringing bump.
You two are nuts.
I voted for this!
I’ve heard talk about a solar farm in our small rural area. Never heard any more about it; seems they have kept it quiet. Now I have just come to understand that it has been operational for awhile, but it seems to have been kept a secret of some sort. I’d like to know what is really going on here, because by now I think most informed citizens know what a real loser something like this is. How much of our already high utility bills have been hiked because of this loser project? Might answer some partially unanswered questions about many power outages we’ve had in the past year or so.
Brought to you by the same people who want to let those hordes run around free in rural areas.
So how is the impact worse with a detention center than with a huge distribution warehouse?
Good to know the NYT cares about the rural little people.

"You get a data center! You get a data center! You all get a data center!"
That’s exactly right!
When your enemy tells you what the plan to do to you, you're well advised to believe them. What's "nuts" is a world in which large mobs of armed thieves routinely invade homes and businesses.
We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto. You might want to watch a video or two about what is happening in South Africa, which was at one time a nice and civilized nation.
Bkmk
Shall we talk about the meat packers that build their slaughter houses in small towns and hire mostly illegal aliens-whose cultures clash/take over those small towns?
Do you mean the plans are OK'd and going forward, or that the farm is up and functional? They are pretty hard to hide.
But I still immediately sense the condescension oozing from that article.
Of course people like that NY Times writer are that way to working class urban people too.
Really to anyone of any class that can be said to do anything productive.
AT LEAST THE ILLEGAL DETENTIONS WILL SUBSIDE
THE DATA CENTERS WILL NOT
THERE ARE PLANS FOR A 40,000 ACRE SUCH FACILITY IN N UTAH—NEAR BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS.
THAT IS 62.5 SQUARE MILES 10 MILES X 6.25 MILES
WILL REQUIRE MORE POWER THAN ENTIRE STATE OF UTAH CURRENTLY USES===
CHEW ON THAT.....
MIGHT BE ABLE TO PROVIDE POWER IN A NUMBER OF WAYS:
CANNOT GET WATER THE SAME WAY
My county is wall to wall data centers. You can drive for a miles on some roads and see nothing but data centers on each side.
These data centers provide a very big tax base for the county.
Exactly my thoughts about detention facilities
“Yo Larry
The ILLEGAL alien detention centers protect the rural communities and provide jobs
Your conflations are vile.”
