An elderly motorist is accused of driving through a group of bicyclists in Georgia — knocking one over and fracturing his spine — before speeding off in a hit-and-run that was caught on camera.
Jerry Wayne Ross, 72, flashed a smile in his booking photo as he faces charges for the alleged hit-and-run with his Honda Pilot, all caught on video, on April 23 in Cherokee County, Ga., according to Fox 5 Atlanta.
The North Georgia Cycling Association was on its weekly Thursday night ride when the older driver was accused of driving up on the group in a suspected road-rage incident.
The cyclists were in the middle of their 32-mile ride through Cherokee County when Ross appeared behind them, blasting his horn for nearly two miles along Sugar Pike Road in Canton.
“Just excessive. Didn’t let off the horn,” Richard Collins, the leader of the group, told Fox 5 Atlanta.
Ross was found hiding out at a neighbor’s house down the road after officials from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office spotted damage to his SUV consistent with hitting a bicycle.
The suspected driver told authorities he had encountered the group of cyclists but denied responsibility, blaming the bikers for the collision, saying the riders had been in the middle of the road, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
Ross was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, aggressive driving, hit-and-run and failing to maintain distance, according to jail records viewed by The Post.
He remains behind bars in the Cherokee County Jail with his charges totaling $24,540.

Yup. However some mt. bikers don't know that you should yield to horseback riders if you encounter them on the trail. I've seen idiots blast right past horses - no warning. Nothing. Yeah, great idea - Spook a 1,000lb animal that can kick you so hard you won't land until next week.
I'm lucky that there are a few dedicated trails for bikes in the area, but that's not always the case.
The car driver was an idiot and will suffer consequences. But the riding group were very rudely riding three across a two-lane, two-direction road with no shoulders as they approached a curve where a car behind them would not be able to pass them..
Since they are a regular traffic safety menace on that road, they should develop a protocol of single file, or double file at MOST, when they are near or in the “no passing” zones with the solid yellow center line. That road may be their favorite, but they don’t own it.
The driver is clearly at fault. But at the same, those riders taking up the entire lane like that brought it upon themselves. It appears that that white line was designed as a bike lane. They should have used it
Yeah, plenty of horses on the trails i ride as well as hikers, e-bikers and an occasional dirt biker. Self preservation instincts motivate me to get well off the trail and let them pass.
Unfortunately, the horse lobby is much better funded than the biker lobby around here and 30 lb. mountain bikes are prohibited by the DNR in some areas for no good reason (dry reservoirs constructed from millions of tons of dirt adjacent to a superfund site - hardly a wilderness area). And have you seen what a 1,000 lb. horse does to a muddy trail?
Perhaps the best way to handle these bikes that block the road is to get a bunch of like minded folks together and block THEIR way as pedestrians.
The taxes on CARS,TRUCKS, AND FUEL paid for the roads. Arrogant leftist idiots in their goofy helmets and no rear view mirrors act like they are special.
I drive those winding roads not safe to pass and those cyclists never cooperate.
Farmers and horse people will move over when they realize they can.

Do bikes have to pay to maintain the roads?
I understand the feeling, but they aren't worth the trouble resulting from giving in to your baser instincts. They pay zero in road taxes and think they own the road by riding in clumps.
Most of the Amish neighborhoods in my part of Pennsylvania have wide shoulders. They are also courteous enough to pull in periodically and let backed up traffic pass when the shoulders aren’t wide enough to safely do so.
