An elderly motorist is accused of driving through a group of bicyclists in Georgia — knocking one over and fracturing his spine — before speeding off in a hit-and-run that was caught on camera.
Jerry Wayne Ross, 72, flashed a smile in his booking photo as he faces charges for the alleged hit-and-run with his Honda Pilot, all caught on video, on April 23 in Cherokee County, Ga., according to Fox 5 Atlanta.
The North Georgia Cycling Association was on its weekly Thursday night ride when the older driver was accused of driving up on the group in a suspected road-rage incident.
The cyclists were in the middle of their 32-mile ride through Cherokee County when Ross appeared behind them, blasting his horn for nearly two miles along Sugar Pike Road in Canton.
“Just excessive. Didn’t let off the horn,” Richard Collins, the leader of the group, told Fox 5 Atlanta.
Ross was found hiding out at a neighbor’s house down the road after officials from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office spotted damage to his SUV consistent with hitting a bicycle.
The suspected driver told authorities he had encountered the group of cyclists but denied responsibility, blaming the bikers for the collision, saying the riders had been in the middle of the road, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
Ross was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, aggressive driving, hit-and-run and failing to maintain distance, according to jail records viewed by The Post.
He remains behind bars in the Cherokee County Jail with his charges totaling $24,540.

As frustrating as it is, the law allows cyclists to ride on the street in most jurisdictions other than on highways and on most streets, there is no minimum speed. So while I understand the frustration of going very slowly behind the bikes, he clearly was wrong in what he did. The cyclists should have pulled over at some point to let motor traffic pass. But he will be found guilty for what he did. The same issue comes up in areas with the Amish who drive horse carts. They go slow and it backs up traffic. Every once in a while, they pull over and let traffic pass. Same thing happens if you live in farm country and someone drives a tractor down the street. You just learn to live with it.
They were blocking the road on purpose, they like doing that sort of thing, they live for doing that.
Most of them need to be beaten up occasionally by vigilantes who catch them doing their passive/aggressive antics and drag them off their bicycles.
That said, looking at the pictures of the cyclists blocking the road instead of lining up in single file, the cyclists come off as being arrogant a-holes.
And I'm a cyclist.
Perennial issue whenever the weather turns warm. Bicycle swarming is an act of entitlement at the expense of the rest of the public. No he shouldn’t have passed them so closely—sometimes we just have to put up with rude and inconsiderate people. btw who was recording this? Cyclists just happen to have a chase car to catch miscreant drivers?
I was driving in Atlanta a few years back. Came across a gang of bikers. They ran a stop sign and cut me off on the four lane (colloquial name, actually at least 5 lanes in most places these days) just north of the river. I followed them into a shopping center and confronted them about gross violations of traffic laws.
Didn’t impact the arrogant wannabees.
The boys on bikes were obstructing traffic. Double yellow line and they should have been single file. The whole group should be ticketed.
In my home state, bicyclists have a “right” to the far left traffic lane - the entire lane. I ride bikes a lot and NEVER make use of this law, although I’ve seen others do this, holding up traffic, etc.
I do not want to tangle with a car, I will not win. Fortunately, my city is putting in bike lanes, some with barriers or even, better, off-road
With gas at $6/gallon - and continuing to rise, I’m using my bike a lot more.
Really! Im only 62 and I would like to run over some bicyclists riding tough in my lane! You aint gotta be old to feel frustration over other humans being assholes. Almost as bad as semi-trucks drag racing down the interstate at exactly the same speed, blocking traffic for miles as they play tiddly-winks with each other.
Exactly correct. No different than a tractor or a horse and buggy - we are all allowed to use the roadway.
And as usual this thread is full of cycling haters who’ve never been on a bike in their entire lives. You and your car do not own the road.
A few years back, in Golden, CO, driving up a windy mountian road. As I came around a tight curve, a group of cyclists was coming down the steep grade. One of them was in center of my lane. He was about six feet from hitting me square on. He managed to swerve back into his lane, but the look on the guy’s face was priceless!
Far left lane? What state is that?
The roads were paved for motorists.
I hope he get’s the crap sued out of him. And plenty of jail time. And for good measure I'd beat the sh!t out of him.
“The boys on bikes were obstructing traffic.”
It’s not wise to provoke random drivers who can put you in the hospital or the morgue.
I think there’s plenty of blame to go around on this one.
Being a cyclist I’ve been on both sides of this.
Yes the old man was a road raging jackass.
Something no one has mentioned is these cyclists ride in these big groups because I suspect many
have delusions they are in the peloton at The Tour De France and they think they own the road.
THEY’RE NOT AND THEY DON’T.
Personally I fixed this problem by selling my carbon fiber, getting off the bike lane and buying a comuter bike to ride sidewalk.
Biggest reason was cars drifting into the bike path which resulted in too many close calls.
Same here.
“No different than a tractor or a horse and buggy - we are all allowed to use the roadway.”
Apples and oranges. The equivalent would be tractors and horse and buggies riding side by side blocking traffic in multiple lanes.
Bikes should ride single file for their own safety and to not block traffic. It’s that simple.
Bicycles in Cherokee county, Georgia have the same rights to the road as motorists. They can ride two abreast and motorists must maintain a three foot distance when passing cyclists.
The solution is simple. Cyclists need to ride single file to the far right. Make it a $1000 fine for every cyclist who is occupying the travel lane for cars. Start doing that and the situation will be resolved. If you don’t make it hurt nothing‘s gonna happen. This is an arrogant attitude. They don’t own the road follow the rules.
Name sounds American.
Huh. He don’t even look Muslim.
What. What?
