PAINESVILLE, Ohio — A Lake County jury on Thursday found a Painesville man guilty on multiple charges stemming from a 2025 fatal shooting that police said “deeply shook” the community.
Avion Gaines was convicted in connection with the death of 20-year-old Wyllyam Sheffey Jr., according to a news release from the Painesville Police Department.
Gaines was found guilty of complicity to aggravated murder, complicity to murder, murder, and multiple counts of complicity to felonious assault, with several firearm specifications. He was also convicted on multiple counts of kidnapping.
Sheffey was fatally shot June 7, 2025, and found in the driver’s seat of a vehicle near the intersection of North State Street and Rockwood Drive. The shooting occurred around 8 p.m., not far from a downtown block party that was taking place that night.
Gaines was one of four people arrested in July in connection with the killing. The others — Zy’avier Jackson, Aviantae Atterberry and Solomon Gaston — were also charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated murder and conspiracy to commit aggravated murder, according to court records.
Authorities have said the shooting was not a random act of violence.

The city has in my 40+ of being a resident of the county been largely taken over by the county government.
Many buildings have either been filled with government offices or been demolished and had government buildings built in their place.
Consequently property tax income to the city have been steadily declining because government buildings are not taxed.
The vast majority of the homes and rental properties have been in decline for the last couple decades. The city of about 20,000 has become essentially an inner city melting pot of South American immigrants and African American welfare recipients.

Ah, Painesville. A beautiful, peaceful American small town.
A great place to settle down and raise a family.
There are some beautiful homes in Painesville.
It is generally peaceful, most of the time.
But, through a party and you can expect something like this to happen.
Sounds like all towns in upstate NY.
Especially a “House Party” (TM)
I would agree with you to a point.
Any town above around 10,000 residents.
Once you get to the point that citizens don’t know each other violence becomes more likely.
Also towns small enough to have a monoculture are more likely to be peaceful.
The push to have a ‘multicultural’ nation was bound to push up crime and violence. The Democrats and open boarder libertarian Republicans should never be forgiven for this.
Cheap labor is not worth what it is doing to this nation.
