NEW YORK (AP) — Alan Osmond, the eldest member of the chart-topping family act The Osmonds, died Monday after decades with multiple sclerosis. He was 76.

According to a family spokesperson, Alan’s wife, Suzanne Osmond, and their eight sons were with him at his home in Lehi, Utah, at the time of his death. Prior to his passing, Alan used a wheelchair and spent a week in intensive care before returning home Thursday on hospice.

A talented songwriter and performer, Alan Osmond helped write some of the Osmond Brothers’ biggest hits, including “One Bad Apple,” “Crazy Horses” and “Are You Up There?”

Born in Ogden, Utah, on June 22, 1949 and raised in a Mormon household, Alan Osmond’s storied musical career began in the 1950s, when he and his brothers Wayne, Merrill and Jay formed a barbershop quartet. He was the oldest of the performing group and the third oldest of his siblings.

MS runs in that family, but it’s not frequently manifested.
Alan was diagnosed in 1987. Alans’ son David has dealt with MS since around 2006. Alan had eight children, all Boys.

What passed for music recording back then would never pass muster today.

Donny voice on this is terrible. He is just screaming, not singing.

The dance part is about the same as the KPop, JPop, TPop, groups of today. Cheesy.

They were lipsyncing the video as there were no mics present. I also don’t think Donny was really playing the piano.

Loved them as a kid.

The stuff today has more screaming, and a lot more auto-tune. The lead singer could carry a tune. They could actually dance. The tune has a melody. Historical reports note that the family members played the instruments. Ok, they weren't the Wrecking Crew. You have the fact that there were youngsters from the same family who could play, sing, and dance. They made a listenable pop ditty. In 1971, if you wanted more musicianship, you can get something from Rick Wakeman or Buddy Rich or Glen Campbell.

I would watch the Donnie & Marie Show in the 70’s and thought is was a wholesome alternative to the other more risque variety shows. Enjoyed what I saw.

I lived in Hawaii at the time, and I thought it was some kind of attack warning.
