Houston, you have a problem

Governor Abbott is dead serious about sanctuary cities. First, he signed a law back in 2017 making sanctuary cities illegal. He is back reminding Houston that there are consequences when you don’t work with ICE or don’t obey the law he signed. Check this out:

Millions of dollars in public safety funding have been frozen for Houston following a recent change in the city’s immigration policy, according to city officials.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire’s office confirmed the update to ABC13 on Tuesday, saying the state had froze [sic] nearly $115 million in public safety funding. During a meeting, Whitmire added that some services by the Houston Police Department had been halted as a result of Gov. Greg Abbott’s actions.

‘This is serious business affecting every Houstonian,’ Whitmire said. ‘Every Houstonian, and our region. It was public safety this time. In a couple of days, it’ll be public health.’

This comes after the city was warned to change or repeal its new immigration policy or risk losing the funds.

Abbott’s office sent the warning in a letter on Monday, escalating tensions between state and local leaders just days after the Houston City Council passed a controversial ordinance defining how police interact with federal immigration authorities.

Controversial ordinance? No. It’s an illegal ordinance or a violation of the aforementioned sanctuary state law. You can’t do that in Texas anymore than you can drive 75 MPH in a Houston school zone.

Freezing funding? Why not arrest them?

“Why not arrest them?”

There are so many issues it’s probably not clear whether what the city is doing is an arrestable offense. A civic leader sets a policy at odds with the law. Do you arrest him or the people charged with enforcing the policy? And when you do arrest them, what is the expected outcome? What are the potential legal penalties? A fine, which would be paid from the city coffers? A prison term? What a political mess that would be. And doing that risks making the person arrested a well-known celebrity and political force. Arguably, it was Hitler’s arrest, trial and imprisonment that greatly increased the public’s awareness of him and made him a sympathetic character. Opps!

“ Abbott’s office sent the warning in a letter”

It’s this suicidal level wimpiness that makes me shut down all relationships where I have to hear repeated complaints about Trump

Don’t forget Abbott is a globalist. 115 million is pocket change to a city the size of Houston.

I think the warning letter is appropriate.

But the stick of operating funds for city safety I think is inappropriate.

I am not sure if Texas law permits it but it does exist in other states, the governor can remove a mayor.

In my mind that would be the proper course for a mayor that refuses to follow state policies.

It is always public safety, public health, or public park funding that is withheld. It would be beautiful is public salaries could be withheld until behavior changes.

Live in Houston an I am sick of what’s going on particularly with the muslims building sharia cities.
If there is a law then enforce it, as long as you continue to coddle these politicians the worst it gets. We’ll soon be another london.

Immigration needs to be frozen for the next 5 years and mass deportation this crap has gotten dangerously out of hand the feds need to get a total grip on it.

If not just place a For Sale sign at the borders.

As a born and raised Texan, I would love to hear 3 reasons why you hate Abbott. (in ten words or less for each reason)

Just for context, millions of Texans think he’s probably the best Governor Texas has had since General Houston. So, maybe you are just on the wrong site.

> 115 million is pocket change to a city the size of Houston.<

The city expects a $174 million deficit this year, which would exceed the record-setting gap of $145 million in 2025.

It’s actually a big deal. City Council is already feuding over what spending to cut and the appetite for tax increases has soured since the tax rates are already quite high. Also, property tax increases are limited by state law.

AG Ken Paxton has already filed a suit against the city for this illegal ordinance and Harris County put a similar ordinance on the back burner.

Tx also did a law banning DEI crappola in Unis. The very Uni right there in Austin said “ok”; and then promptly rebranded all of its racist garbage. Tx gov’mt came back with a letter telling them that they would audit compliance with the law.

Circle back. Always.

TX should come back to audit compliance with no warning and should have sufficient quantity of handcuffs.
