NYC judge claims prison sentence for ‘cooler cop’ will serve as ‘deterrent’ to other police officers

The Bronx judge who sent an ex-NYPD sergeant to prison Thursday for fatally flinging a picnic cooler at a fleeing drug suspect claimed the punishment would serve as a “general deterrent” for other police officers.

Judge Guy Mitchell justified the sentence of 3-to-9 years behind bars for former Sgt. Erik Duran, 38, by arguing, in part, that the decision would send a message — even as police and legal experts ripped it as “extreme and damaging” for law enforcement.

The judge also rejected Duran’s testimony that throwing the cooler at scooter-riding Eric Duprey, 30, during the August 2023 undercover drug sting had been justified.

... The decision by Mitchell, whom Mayor Bill de Blasio appointed in 2015 and Mayor Eric Adams reappointed in 2022, sparked furor from law enforcement.

“It’s a huge miscarriage of justice,” former NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly told The Post, adding that he believed Duran, who served the city for 13 years, had been treated too harshly.

“It was a reflex response that virtually every cop would act in a similar situation given the same circumstances,” he argued.

A Brooklyn police supervisor insisted Duran “should have gotten a medal” instead of time in the clink.

How come they don’t apply harsh sentencing as a deterrent to habitual criminals?

And if it leads to a police walkout? Then what?

I wish there was a website for corrupt judges. A listing of all of their horrendous rulings. The criminals that they’ve released onto the citizenry. Expose them all.

“Then we hire some honorable men to do a very hard job!”

We already have them.

Y’all know Judges are Lawyers.
I’d prefer a STEM educated guy
being advised by three
Lawyers.
No more for “life appointed Judges”!

Someone that can ruin a person for life
needs oversight,
by the society that pays for
his decisions.
Not his other lawyer friends!

I firmly believe every judge
needs to be scared to do his job.
Much like a soldier pulling a trigger.
You’d better make a good judgement!

“Then we hire some honorable men to do a very hard job!”

We already have them.

Not enough of them.

I’d rather have a 100 honest cops,
and an armed populous
rather than 1,000 cops.

A judge is just a lawyer with too much power.

This judge should never know peace. More human garbage in a black robe.

“Killed by an airborne picnic cooler ...”
That was not explained at all
Was the kid killed by the cooler in flight or did he die in a crash caused by one ?
