I have this perverse instinct to look back to Madison, WI - the progressive town where I lived for nearly 20 years, trying to become educated. They are showing the same signs of conspicuously well-coordinated, well-funded campaigns (attempting to appear grassroots) against data centers in Dane County and nearby.

I think the way this is going to play out is that select, primarily red-state jurisdictions will allow data center development, while blue states will not. Red states will win economically, blue states will not. So, same old story, different day. The important thing is that the United States leads the way and does not allow China to take a lead on this critical, transformative technology.

In the short run, red states win, blue states lose. In the long run, terrestrial data centers may fade a bit. Elon Musk is already proposing data centers in space - and that has some appeal. Unlimited solar energy, easy cooling.
