In my 22 years on Maui and 4000 or so days sailing I had just 2 whale encounters, both sailing Maalaea Bay.

One time a humpback pod surfaced right in front of me but I was able to just drop into the water but I was very close to them. They are HUGE!

Another time one breached right next to me - I got splashed by the landing.

Had many other encounters with other different marine life as well.
