A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy died after suffering a medical emergency while participating in the 2026 Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay race, officials announced.
The deputy, assigned to the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station, was among numerous law enforcement personnel representing their agencies at the annual event when the medical emergency occurred, according to a statement shared by the department on social media.

Officials described the deputy as a 13-year veteran whose loss is being felt across the LASD community.
The Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay is an annual long-distance relay race that draws teams from law enforcement agencies across the country.

I ran the Army 10 miler in DC in 1990 at age 35. When I was at the 8 mile mark a Care Flight chopper landed at the finish line. Found out later it was an Airborne Ranger Major about 30. Sometimes you just die.
Baker California brags that it has the world’s tallest thermometer.
They built it because Baker is in the Mojave Desert, it’s next door to Death Valley, and it’s really hot.
Today’s high temp in Baker is forecast to be 97. Yesterday was just as hot.
The article doesn’t say what the deputy’s medical emergency was, but running in 90 degree heat ptobably didn’t help.
Male/female? Age....? Pre-existing medical condition? In physical shape? Humidity? Dehydrated? On meds? Any lessons to be learned?
Better be in good shape if starting a long run from a desert town that brags its got the largest thermometer in the world.
