I have been a whitetail deer hunter for decades. However, I did not get serious about it until four years ago. I put up a deer stand. Put out corn when legal. Put out a game camera. Washed my clothes in unscented detergent. Then hung them in the screened porch. Practiced at the range to make sure both my muzzle loader and 30-06 were sited in.

Then get up before dark and go out there and wait. Dressed from head to toe in camo. No one else hunts in the area around my house. The first deer I shot two years ago I hit in the left shoulder with the 50 caliber bullet of the muzzle loader. I flew sideways several feet. After about 30 seconds it got up and crabbed off. I never found it. Even brought out the beagle to track it.

Last November I shot another deer(buck) the second day of rifle season. It dropped dead about 100 feet from where I shot it. I had seen this buck three times at night on the game camera. Never during daylight hours. He was following a young doe that morning at 6:30am. He is in the freezer.

My point is that it is not that easy to be successful hunting deer. They basically have to walk in front of you and stand still. Preferably broadside.
They can see movement better than you. Especially in low light. That is why they are most active at first light and then just prior to dark.
They see certain colors better than others. They see black and blue very well. They do not see red well and can not see orange at all unless you move.
They can smell you from a half mile away. Their ears collect sound and they can turn them towards you to gather sound better. Basically, you are at a disadvantage when you hunt.
