When the game of ‘Cowboys and muslims’ goes hot it will most likely start in Texas.
Declaring islam to be a religion and hence protected by the US Constitution is to me like a mentally ill guy putting on a dress and declaring himself to be a woman. Reality says that neither is true therefore neither should enjoy any of the legal protections afforded to normal US citizens.
President Thomas Jefferson wrote:
“A strict observance of the written law is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to the written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the ends to the means.”

“Declaring islam to be a religion”
Religion is properly and constitutionally something between followers (and a god or gods).
The harming of harmless innocents can’t be condoned.
If and it is a big if any battles will be fought, it will be between muslims and Hindus. Or muslims and somebody else. It won’t be between muslims and those who call themselves Christians.
