The “Far from moribund” refers to the status of Islam in the 19th century when the Ottoman Empire was viewed as the Sick Man of Europe, and other Islamic countries were too primitive to pose any threat, and immigration was not yet weaponized by liberals. Islam had by then ceased to be the great threat it was in the centuries prior, especially most recently in the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, when it directly threatened Europe. That was thought to have been its last hurrah.
