Rand Paul floats possible 2028 run, pushes back on Trump-era protectionism

Kentucky senator says he wants to represent 'free-market wing' of Republican Party as alternative to Trump-Vance populism

Libertarian-minded Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky is leaving the door wide open to a possible 2028 White House run.

"We’ll decide after 2026," Paul said in an interview that posted this weekend.

Paul ran for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, but dropped out after a distant fifth-place finish in Iowa's Republican caucuses. He won re-election later that year in the Senate, and was re-elected again in 2022.

The senator, who for years has been a leading voice inside the GOP for fiscal conservatism, civil liberties and a non-interventionist foreign policy for America, has lamented the declining number of Republicans embracing such an agenda in a party dominated by President Donald Trump. And he's pledged to try and bring such an agenda back.

...

Pointing to Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who is perceived as the GOP frontrunner in the race to succeed the term-limited Trump, Paul emphasized that "there needs to be a free-market wing of the Republican Party. And I want to be part of trying to ensure that still exists."

The better angle? Run as an isolationist.

"I’m just posting the news FRiend"

Thanks, but we don't need to get our national news from foreigners, people who don't even live in this country.

If you support due process for drug runners and illegals, vote for Rand Paul.

"His Dad is still going strong at 90 — obviously condemning what’s going on"

Which obviously makes the old man and his son redundant.

"Exactly. FR should grow a pair and ban all these libertarian moles. They're anti all things Republican."

FR Mods have treated these repeat offenders with kid gloves. They suspend them for a short time, then allow them to return to reoffend. A slap on the wrist over and over with no change in behavior. It's no different than liberal Judges and D.A.'s repeatedly releasing criminals, so they can reoffend within hours. A revolving door of justice that never eliminates the actual problem.

"What do you base this on?"

On the fact that he's more concerned about the rights of criminals and illegals than he is about the rights of American citizens.

go for it, Rand! ... i doubt you’ll even make the debate platform this time given your recent, insane history of anti-MAGA, “principled” bullshit ...

“principled conservatives” who took potshots at anything and everything that didn’t perfectly adhere to their strict “principles” were the death of the GOP for decades ...

now, finally, we now have an ACTUAL REAL conservative LEADER who also has pragmatic flexibility to GET THINGS DONE AND MAKE THINGS BETTER without being overly hindered by inflexible “principles” and who has saved the GOP from extinction, at least for a while ...

“there needs to be a free-market wing”

OMG, back to that outdated defeatist bullshit ... for decades the GOP plumped “free-market” trade that was anything but free and which did nothing but make the USA the world’s patsy ...
FINALLY we have a leader who replaced “free-market” trade with FAIR MARKET trade, so no, RAND, we absolutely do NOT need a “free-market” wing ....
