Bosses are firing Gen Z grads just months after hiring them—here’s what they say needs to change

After complaining for years that Gen Z grads are difficult to work with, bosses are no longer all talk, no action: Now they’re rapidly firing young workers who aren’t up to scratch just months after hiring them.

The numbers are stark. According to a survey, six in 10 employers admitted they had already sacked the Gen Z workers they had hired fresh out of college.

Intelligent.com, a platform dedicated to helping young professionals navigate the future of work, surveyed nearly 1,000 U.S. business leaders. It found that the class of 2024’s shortcomings are shaping how bosses hire next—and it’s not good news for future grads.(snip)

So where is it going wrong for fresh-faced graduates?

Employers’ gripe with young people today is their lack of motivation or initiative—50% of the leaders surveyed cited that as the reason why things didn’t work out with their new hire.

Bosses also pointed to Gen Z being unprofessional, unorganized, and having poor communication skills as their top reasons for having to sack grads.

Leaders say they have struggled with the latest generation’s tangible challenges, including being late to work and meetings often, not wearing office-appropriate clothing, and using language appropriate for the workspace.

Now, more than half of hiring managers have come to the conclusion that college grads are unprepared for the world of work.

I would say only hire vets, but then I found out I’m only about six percent of the American population!
I was also an NCO so that percentage gets even smaller.

Want a good motivated workforce? Hire a NCO vet.
Any NCO can motivate most about anybody to do
their best.

Gen Z parents to blame. All the white liberal moms who weren’t popular in high school somehow managed to have kids they turned into their best friends and progressive robots

I’d guess more like: The damn kids have a worthless college degree in gender studies, and can’t read or write.
College degrees don’t mean what they did 40-50 years ago.

The company you're describing sounds like it's such a great place to work that nobody wants to leave. Hold that up against companies with high turnover and see what is driving the workers away.

What you're describing has always been there in well-run successful companies: aggressive new-hires, newly-promoted team leads, first-line managers, department/division heads, C-suite officers.

People are usually 25-30 years into their careers before reaching upper-management, and once there they plan to stay for awhile because they heve the breadth and depth of experience to handle such a role.

It's the nature of the job pyramid, with fewer opportunities the higher you get. But the higher you get, the more you need to know, and the more you needed to demonstrate that you can do the job. Those candidates get identified early on and are put on high-performance tracks to see how far they can go. Others work the jobs that they have, perhaps looking ahead to the next one, or perhaps are grateful for the job that they have that let's them bring home the paycheck that supports putting their kids through school or caring for an elderly parent.

Everyone's personal situations are different and nobody really knows what's going on in their coworkers' homes, so we accept that we work in a place that nobody wants to leave and plan our careers through it as best as we can without begrudging the successes of others who came before us.

Or we leave and hope the next company is as good as the one we left, and that my experience transfers over with minimal career backside or the promised improvements materialize.

And concert tickets.

Led Zeppelin was playing Buffalo in the 70s. Tickets were $30. A girl in HS really wanted to go but didn't have money. She started a 'Go Fund Me' - she would eat a worm (chew, not just swallow) for $30. She did it before lunch.

Childish arrogance too. They doubt anyone can do anything and that they can always do better. Jealous Pessimists.

“Hey dumb a$$ - tell me what is Ohm’s Law?”

Seems it is a nerd challenge because someone said they didn’t like illegal aliens and you do.

Fact is, Ohm’s law is such a basic thing that you are proving the point of the article. Gen Z thinks easy crap like knowing something about Ohm’s law means they are geniuses when that is merely 5th grade material.

Believe me, AI CANNOT do an attorney job. I just had a client send me a motion he wanted me to file that he drafted with the help of AI. It was total garbage and the judge would have thought I had lost my mind if I filed it. My client of course, thought it was genius.

In case y’all have not figure it out, AI is only as good as the person behind it.

About 15 years ago, I went to a CLE and one of the classes was about shipping your legal research out to India. Hah! What utter caca. No one I know does this, and if you file some crap in front of a judge you will lose all your crediblity.

So, no, AI is not going to replace lawyers anytime soon. That said, there are lots of lawyers, so if you need one, interview enough until you find one you trust who will call you back or email you back in 24 hours. There is NO EXCUSE for an attorney not being able to get back to you in 24 hours.

Here’s a clue for GenZ to help them out on the employment front.

Try being 15 minutes early.

Good point. When I was in the JAG Corps, one of the West Pointers taught me that “dependable” is huge.

It is rare that a backhoe can be used in established homes on city and suburban lots to replace sewer lines, hand digging is the way to go.

Oh really? What crap. Some people enjoy work, like being busy with something to do other than naval gaze. Be productive for its own sake. It will pay off eventually.
