I don’t remember lobster, but I do recall steak.

They were the shape of circular disks that were perhaps four or five inches across, barely an inch thick , and weren’t that great, but could be made palatable by getting several pats of butter to put on top and letting them melt. But hey, it was ostensibly steak, and better than skid-burgers.

One day as I walked past the serving area to get in the chow line, I saw those disc-like steaks being served, and they were an acceptable food, so I got in line, got a steak, and grabbed a few pats of butter.

When I cut into it, it was very dry and kind of lighter colored inside, but I sawed through it and put a chunk in my mouth. I spit it out. It was repulsive.

I went back and said to the guy serving my steak that there was something wrong with my steak, and asked if I could have another one.

He said: “They aren’t steak. They’re liver.

And I hate liver passionately. I remember thinking something like “What kind of cruel trick is this???”

And now you know why liver is smothered with onions.
