Dems and mullahs at play

It looks as if the long romance between the Democrats and one of the worst governments of the 21st century is at last coming to a close.

For nearly fifty years, there has existed a very strange dynamic between the Democrats and the Islamic Republic of Iran. While we don’t know the exact details of the relationship, it exists and has led to some bizarre twists in policy over the years.

Jimmy Carter’s treatment of Iran was all of a piece with his backwoods Wilsonianism. More states shed democracy in favor of totalitarianism during the Carter administration than at any time since World War II. Among them were Nicaragua, Ethiopia, Rhodesia… and Iran.

Carter handed the country to Khomeini by insisting that Shah Pahlevi flee the country – after which, in a particularly disgraceful episode of an unusually disgraceful presidency, Carter refused the cancer-stricken Shah permission to enter the U.S. for treatment. Allies in threatened nations undoubtedly took note.

Everything was fine after that until Iranian “students,” following the orders of the good, holy ayatollah, seized the U.S. embassy, taking 66 hostages and holding 52 (the others were released as a “goodwill gesture”) for 444 days.

Carter, as was his habit, dithered for over a year until finally giving permission for a rescue operation. Eagle Claw was a Rube Goldberg deal to start with, overcomplex and carried out by troops with little training in that kind of mission.

Even worse, Carter’s hesitation had delayed the operation until the haboob season,

Meanwhile...

KATIE MILLER: “I just want to point out that what we've spent on the war so far is less than what Tim Walz has lost from Somali fraud in Minnesota.”
