It was by design. The Educational System slowly turned into the Indoctrination System. Industries started leaving the United States for other Nations. Narcotic Drug use became socially accepted. We started fighting the War on Poverty, The War on Crime, The War on Drugs, The War on Terror and losing them along with a chunk of our freedom[s]. The War on Poverty helped to destroy the closeness of the family unit.

Speaking to the choir....I started life in the inner city of Rochester, NY in 1952. As I grew, our neighborhood turned mostly Black (”colored” or “negro” back then) and they kept their houses better than the Whites and had actual families with mothers and fathers. They were my playmates - until LBJ came along with his crap and the race riots started - the mid 60s were the turning point from full integration into society to becoming pissed off criminals...and a sick society that left it’s values behind. Then peanu-bran Carter making a new “Department of Education” in 1980, by separating it from the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, was the final nail.
