Canada coach Jon Cooper blasts ‘TV-driven’ rules after heartbreaking Olympics loss to US

Jon Cooper is blaming the Olympic overtime rules for Canada’s loss to the United States.

Unlike the 4 Nations Face-Off and the Stanley Cup Playoffs, where the overtime period is five-on-five, the Olympics use a three-on-three format. This is designed to make overtime periods quicker and reduce shootouts. It’s also used in the NHL regular season.

“You take four players off the ice, now hockey’s not hockey anymore,” Cooper said, via The Hockey News. ”There’s a reason overtime and shootouts are in play — it’s all TV-driven to end games, so it’s not a long time. There’s a reason why it’s not in the Stanley Cup final or playoffs.”

It’s gotta be so overwhelming! You lost the game AND you’re Canadian. No wonder he’s crying

They had a 5-on-3 against the US for 93 seconds and couldn’t get it done

Look at the bright side of this situation Canada… YOU ARE FIRST PLACE!! First place loser! Look at it from the view of all those who did not make it to the Gold medal round! It was a great match.

Canada should play the winner of the Bronze medal game to see who really deserves the Silver medal.

No fooling.

I'm sure there are plenty of great Canadians, who are conservative and living lives of great integrity. And then there are a lot of whiny babies.

Someone needs to inform the coach that the entire sport of hockey is for entertainment, thus money. And without the TV contracts they would be on the level of the womens professional basketball leagues and their many failures.

The whole idea of the winter Olympics is for money, not sport. The original Olympics were set up for basic competitions like running, jumping, swimming, and wrestling. They had nothing to do with snow or ice.

I officiated at different levels in many sports and there is always some really idiotic fool trying to justify losing. And they can get really stupid like this guy. Besides, if you didn’t like the rules of play, stay home. At least there you can display some integrity to your opinion and pride in who you are and who your country is.

Besides, where was he in his bitch when he was competing for their other overtime game they won with Czechia. Czechia has approximately 40,000 officially enrolled male ice hockey players while Canada has well over 100K and constitutes almost half of the NHL rosters (41%). Should Canada remove their NHL players for the overtime to be fair? If they lost that way, he had a little more to make a mockery of himself with. Or did Canada not think they could win with these rules and should have stayed home? They apparently ain’t that good, eh?

The simple solution to this would be to not televise the Olympics. Or professional and major college sports as well.

TV does eventually take over and degrade anything it touches. Whether he has a valid point about what tv has done to hockey, I have no idea. All I know about hockey is that a touchdown is six points with a one or two point conversion option for the extra point, and the option is just another tv contamination. Does hockey get style points the way figure skating does?

Anyhow, kill tv.

do people still blame TV for allowing the three-point shot in the NBA?

It isn’t a question of “benefitting” from the rule. No one assumes Canada “benefitted” from anything in the earlier match, and America didn’t “benefit” from the rule yesterday. It’s just the rule. Would it have come out differently if it was 5v5 overtime? Who knows. Canada certainly was only able to play to a tie 5v5 in regulation time.

I disagree. This is a common win or lose attitude in hockey.
Hockey people don’t like 3 on 3 or shootouts but as he said they’re necessary. I’ve sat and watched a five hour hockey game but most people wouldn’t and the TV partners are clear that it’s a no go for them.

“You take four players off the ice, now hockey’s not hockey anymore,”

If you agree to compete in men's Olympic hockey, you agree to men's Olympic hockey rules, and btw didn't you guys have 5-3 power play advantage during regulation?

and radio. And the Internet. The only way to find out who won is to attend the game.

Silly!

The players, the manager, and expert commentators on Team Sweden and Swedish TV all commented on the 3 by 3 OT PRIOR to the tournament. None of them liked it, but everyone agreed that these were the rules, so that was it.

After the QF when Sweden lost to Team USA after more than 8 minutes OT, no one complained about the rules. We should have beaten Slovakia with 3 instead of 2 goals, and then avoided USA or Canada before the semi-finals, or scored ourselves during the long OT.

No sour grapes there...

I don’t like the 3 on 3 or the shootouts. Keep playing the game with as many overtime periods as necessary until someone wins.
