Many people saw the triumphant figure skater Alysa Liu win gold for the U.S. yesterday. Liu skated a nearly flawless program to become the first American woman to claim the gold medal in 24 years.
Most people don't realize that Arthur Liu, Alysa's father, participated in the Tiananmen Square protest as part of the 1989 democracy movement, which led to his persecution. At 25, he went into exile in the U.S. as a political refugee and shortly after became a lawyer. Alysa is the oldest of his five children.
Liu was a primary female recruitment target for the CCP's United Front Work Department (UFDW), focused on recruiting overseas athletes along with other subversive activities.
In 2022, she and her father were targeted by UFWD spies in an operation to gather private information about Chinese political dissidents in the West. One spy, Matthew Ziburis, posed as a U.S. Olympic Committee official and requested copies of their passports, which Mr. Liu believed was an attempt to silence him from speaking out against Chinese human rights abuses. He was concerned about Alysa's safety while she competed in Beijing in 2022 but was able to secure assurances from the State Department that they would take extra measures to protect her, providing her with two bodyguards, whom Liu said had protected her well.

Why do we allow the Chinese to place police stations in our country to control Chinese dissenters?
Because bribery and treason.
Arthur Liu is a hero. I wonder what Alysa thinks of turncoat Eileen Gu.
Unfortunately.
Not a fan of the CCP, but we have FBI offices in most countries around the world.
In the 1940’s we had Tokyo Rose, now in 2026 we have Beijing Barbie on skis.
Good one! 👍
Congratulations to Olympic Champion Alysa Liu and her heroic father Arthur!
Between her victory and that of the USA hockey teams, this was NOT a useless Winter Olympics!
If only somebody else could cover the games instead of NBC.
Wow, this is incredible insight.
Adding to the intrigue of the Eileen Gu nonsense.
Tell me about it.
All they’ve done is give us every update on Eileen Gu status.
Because she’s “American”. And most decorated. But she’s on the Chinese team, voluntarily! I don’t need to hear how poor Gu finished 8th! (Because they don’t show beyond 6th on the tv, so we have to mentionher!)
Reading this, maybe be a bit tolerant of Eileen Gu....who was recruited young and who’s mother wasn’t as smart as Alysa’s???
America’s sweetheart. Such a joy to watch.
“Beijing Barbie on skis.”
Excellent!
True! I didn’t watch at all four years ago, although I always did before that.
But I had a feeling I’d enjoy watching this year. And I did.
“If only somebody else could cover the games instead of NBC.”
Hope you’re not complaining about Snoop Dog.
I’m actually ok with him.
