You have to pull up to get the circled tab to disengage, flip the switch and then release to let the tab reengage on the other side. I can do little quarter inch switches with just fingertip friction, but those fuel switches look like they would need a real grasp and pull.

Exactly correct,
as can be seen in your depiction, the fuel control switch(s) cannot be accidentally moved to ‘cutoff’ (they are protected on left and right by rigid guards. see the blue tab in the photo)

They can however, BOTH be placed in cutoff at any time .
