Former first lady Michelle Obama argued that getting accepted into college for being a star athlete is no different than being accepted due to affirmative action policies.
During Wednesday’s episode of Mrs. Obama’s “IMO” podcast, comedian Josh Johnson spoke about his own experience as a young Black comedian and writer and sometimes being the only Black person in the room.
“It is funny because, like, you know, people talk about, like, DEI and some of these initiatives and everything. And the thing that’s always funny to me about the outrage is that y’all already have the number,” Johnson said.
He argued that out of 100 people, eight to 10 might be set aside for minorities or women, and then those positions are a source of outrage.
He went on to argue that, for many people, their belief is that were it not for those seats set aside, they would have gotten in.
“When it was just like 100 White slots, there was like the 101st White guy who couldn’t get in,” Johnson said.
“So, it’s like, ‘You might not be able to beat other White people.'”
“And they probably won’t let you because they will keep changing the rules to keep being at the top,” Mrs. Obama said.
“My first realization of that came when I went to Princeton, right? Because I got, you know, applied, but my counselor said, ‘I don’t know if you’re Princeton material.’ Even though my brother was there, even though I was a top student, it was, like, so it set up this notion that this place is something really special.”
The former first lady then suggested that while one might be insecure about benefiting from affirmative action, getting into college for being an athlete is basically the same thing.

A special kind of Stupid, she is.
Being a student athelete usually requires talent and is not an immutable characteristic. Duh.
Title IX doesn’t mention ability on the field.
As the British say: “Why don’t you just close your Gob?”
A special kind of Stupid, she is.
I still hear people insist that either one would make a great President.
“””A special kind of Stupid, she is.”””
Be careful what you say. Big Mike might give you a beat down.
So she went to Princeton, was a First “Lady”, and still spends her days blaming whitey.
Apples and oranges. If she’s so stupid she doesn’t get that then I just don’t know...
Someone should ask her how many hours a day she practiced to be black.
she is correct ... at least for female athletes ...
“Being a student athelete usually requires talent and is not an immutable characteristic. Duh.”
At least they can catch up on their sleep in class.
It’s doesn’t mention ability at all, but the coaches who recruit male or female athletes to D1 schools won’t be coaches very long if they don’t recruit D1 athletes with talent.
It’s OK to discriminate based on talent but Title IX prohibits discriminating based on race or sex.
Does Big Mike ever get tired of whining?! Although I probably already know the answer to that question.
Because we only need 90% of Princeton graduates to be qualified?
Today’s FR Challenge: Say Something Nice About the Obamas:
My entry;
Michelle’s daughters do a fairly good job of staying OUT of the news. It could be the reporters make a special effort to
‘See No Evil’ when the subject is Malia or Sasha, but that’s the result.
It is helpful that neither young lady feels the compulsion to chirp online about her latest ‘feelings’ on controversial topics. Barron Trump has learned/ is learning the same kind of lessons, and w/o a sympathetic press.
**Mrs. Obama, your daughters can do it! They can live their lives like private citizens. Why can’t you do it?
How long will we have to hear of her stupidity?
There shouldn’t even be a Title IX in the first place.
Classic example for out-of-control-government.
Title IX prevents discrimination against straight older white males.
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance”
IOW scholarships solely for women are a violation of Title IX.
Being a student athelete usually requires talent and is not an immutable characteristic. Duh.

I don’t believe anyone should be accepted on the basis of athletics. It should be solely based on academic achievement and test scores.
Colleges weren’t built so athletes can play sports. If they can get accepted as every other student (academics), I am okay if they play sports. Sports has become a way of dumbing down our academic institutions.
Maybe some of these potential athletes would focus more on academics if they knew they had to succeed academically if they wanted to play college sports. We’d all be better off it the long-run if they did.
And, no, I don’t agree with Moosechelle that we need to accept based on DEI.
