I have long had a Gore-Tex bivy bag from Feathered Friends and blocking the wind goes a long way to making it through a night alive if one has nothing else, mountain day hikers should carry one and a couple of hand warmers if nothing else, of course they would want one of those that come in a rolled up size of a pair of socks, that and the handwarmers, a AAA flashlight and some fire starting material would fit into a small camera belt pouch or into a jacket pocket.

I think the bothy bag is primarily for British day hikers who tire of the high winds or perhaps the rain and use the bothy bag to take a windproof tea break out of the elements, mine weighs 12.7 ounces and you just pull it over you and sit on part of it with your partner or your backpack facing you, it is for sitting inside of and is too small for sleeping (comfortably), but very light and handy for what it is.

Survival gear for casual outings is like which caliber pistol to carry, it has to be something that you will actually have with you, not leave on the dresser back home.

You know all this, but it is for the thread.

These days I’m not hiking as much as I’m taking my horses out and getting them miles. Then it’s usually one firearm on the horse and one on me in case I end up in the dirt with a grizz bearing down heh.
