The Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Baptist minister and two-time presidential candidate whose booming oratory and populist message propelled the Civil Rights Movement in the decades after the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., died Tuesday, his family said.
He was 84.
"Our father was a servant leader — not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world,” the Jackson family said in a statement.
Civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton said in a statement that “our nation lost one of its greatest moral voices” and paid tribute to a man who “carried history in his footsteps and hope in his voice.”
"Reverend Jackson stood wherever dignity was under attack, from apartheid abroad to injustice at home. His voice echoed in boardrooms and in jail cells," Sharpton said.
A cause of death was not immediately given. Jackson's family said he died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones.

He cashed in his chips on the same day Rush did.
NBC: “Civil rights icon.” Okay.
A great loss to the grifting communities.
Jesse seems to be a minor player compared to the Somalian “community”
Jackson was staunchly anti-abortion, calling it murder, and like slavery in controlling the life of another human being.
Then sold his soul to the Democrats in 1984.
I hadn’t thought that much about Rev Jackson, but when a member of the most reviled group in the multiverse praises him, this does raise considerable doubt as regard to his ‘accomplishments’.
Too bad he did not hear footsteps behind him at night and turn around to find he was being trailed by black radical thugs. He could have been hoist with his own petard which would have been fair play.
More like a “Blackmailing Icon”...am I allowed to say “Blackmail”?
His family inhaled his ideology.
“Servant leader?” BARF!
The King of Race Pimps.
Now that crown belongs to Reverend Al not so Sharpton.
This fool did a lot of calculated damage to our Republic intentionally and he most certainly had help to orchestrate his continued support of division and chaos. May he rot in hell.
Again?
Rev. Jesse Jackson, a civil rights grifter extraordinaire, dies at 84.
No one could shake down a major industry, or corporation, quite as effectively as the Reverend Jackson.
The story about him putting his hands in MLK’s blood has always stood out for me.
Jesse Lee Peterson says he stopped believing the white man was keeping the black man down when he saw the big house and nice cars Jesse Jackson had. He realized the white man was not keeping Jesse or Al Sharpton down. 😆
More like Race “Escort”! Besides Al Sharpton nobody has done more to sew hatred between blacks and whites. He deserves no adulation, only pity!
I thought he was much older. Enough said.
Doing harm to race relations, and not good, is not the way to go out.
