Italian authorities successfully foiled a dramatic armed assault on an armoured cash transit vehicle along a major highway in the Puglia region on Monday February 9. The attack involved explosions, firearms and blocked vehicles, creating a tense and dangerous situation for motorists travelling along the motorway. Police and emergency services responded quickly, ensuring no one was injured despite the severity of the incident.
The assault occurred on the Lecce–Brindisi motorway, a key route in southern Italy, and left drivers shocked as they witnessed masked attackers using vehicles and explosives to halt traffic. Eyewitnesses described seeing thick smoke rising from the highway amongst the cars, while the armoured van was targeted in a coordinated attempt to seize its valuables. The rapid intervention of the police force ensured the security of the van’s contents.
Highway Blocked and Explosives Deployed
Reports indicate the attackers deliberately blocked multiple lanes of the motorway, forcing the armoured van to stop and isolating it from surrounding traffic. They then deployed explosives and firearms to try to gain access to the van. Motorists captured video and photographs of the chaotic scene, showing the vehicle exploding and a column of thick smoke rising over the roadway.
The assailants were dressed in dark clothing and appeared well-prepared, using firearms to intimidate the armoured van personnel. Their use of explosives created a hazardous situation not only for the van but also for passing motorists, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.
Police Response and Arrests
The Carabinieri, Italy’s national military police, arrived at the scene swiftly. An exchange of gunfire occurred between officers and the assailants. Authorities confirmed that no casualties resulted from the confrontation among officers, civilians, or van personnel.
Two suspects were apprehended near the highway following the police intervention. Other members of the criminal group reportedly fled the area in getaway vehicles, triggering a broader manhunt. Law enforcement urged witnesses to provide any information or footage that could assist in identifying and apprehending the remaining perpetrators.
Eyewitness Accounts Motorists reported sudden stops and confusion as the road was blocked. Witnesses described chaotic scenes, with emergency vehicles arriving rapidly while drivers remained trapped.
Authorities emphasised the professionalism of law enforcement in securing the area and ensuring the safety of both motorists and armoured van personnel. Several drivers said they were impressed by the speed of the police response, noting that the rapid action likely prevented injuries or theft.
Investigation and Security Implications
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, focusing on tracing firearms and explosives used and identifying remaining suspects. Forensic teams are examining the scene and reviewing motorway surveillance footage to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Officials have not confirmed whether the attackers succeeded in seizing valuables. Police emphasised that the swift response prevented potential injuries and theft, while highlighting the security risks faced by cash-in-transit vehicles on public roads. The highway was reopened after several hours, and authorities continue to pursue leads to ensure all suspects are apprehended.
The incident has sparked renewed discussion on road security for high-value transport vehicles, with law enforcement reiterating the need for vigilance and rapid response measures across the national network.

Let me guess: Mohammed and Mohammed?
Must be, nobody ever heard of an Italian criminal organization of any kind.
I was stationed in S. Italy and drove a short section of that road on the way to/from work at San Vito Air Station - During our in-brief, we were told that you don’t F with the Carabinieri - if you don’t do exactly what they ask, when they ask it, they have no compunction about opening fire. It’s like a super SWAT group.
