Five stranded on closed mountain pass after Uber driver insisted on following incorrect GPS

A recent Uber trip in Summit County will likely become something four unfortunate passengers will laugh about years down the road. That said, it must have been very frustrating at the time it all went down.

According to a report from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, four riders and their Uber driver became stranded on the snowmobile-only Georgia Pass after the driver’s GPS unit reportedly told him to take the route during a trip to Bailey. Prior to getting stranded, the passengers reportedly told the driver that his GPS was wrong multiple times, but he continued, insistent on following the navigation unit’s instructions.

Prior to getting stuck on the snowy road, the driver passed three large signs that noted the route was closed to wheeled vehicles. That didn’t stop the driver though, who eventually slid off the groomed portion of the road and into a ditch while approaching Middle Fork.

No one was injured, but the vehicle was immobilized until a deputy with a tow rope arrived at the scene. The driver was ultimately issued a citation for his actions – but the problems with vehicles on Georgia Pass in recent days didn’t stop there.

On the same recent evening, a juvenile snuck out of his home for a late-night drive to “clear his head.” He, too, made the unfortunate decision of attempting to travel the snowmobile-only Georgia Pass, which ends up reaching an elevation of about 11,598 feet.

After driving several miles up the road, his vehicle also became stuck. Amid a lack of cell phone service, he opted to embark on an hour-long walk to Tiger Road, eventually getting enough signal to call his mother for help.

In Wyoming where I grew up, they have gates that close the roads if the passes are closed. Same here in Washington. Some of them are just one lane closures so you can get around them if you think you can make it.

Some comedian once said he believed he could survive on a big hike but he and his buddies took a couple of spare Miwok guides just in case.

So not a situation anywhere like this, but I had a Lyft driver, about six months ago, followed the wrong GPS. Actually Lyft was giving him the wrong exit. When I tried to tell him to get off the exit before, which was the direct shot to my home, I found out that he couldn’t speak English. Long story short, he followed the wrong directions, ended up getting stopped at a gated community, and then we had to use Google translate for me to type in the directions in English and translate it to Spanish for him. After the fact, I was kind of annoyed that I didn’t think to tell him exito triente, but then again, why should I have had to?

That’s what I picture here. And no, please don’t. When I lived in Europe, I learned the local language. I mean I went to school. I speak English in my country.

Sorry, I just got the thought the riders might of got hungry and held a grudge against the driver. So the survivors said they waited at ( Donner) pass until the eaten died Mighty white of them, considering the conditions. Of course it’s a well fed he said against leftovers.

Cooked right do Uber drivers taste like chicken. Asking for a friend on Donor [Donner] Pass?

No thanks. You never know what he's been eating that made him that stupid.

Now using him as bait to attract wolves, mountain lions, or bears to shoot...

Near my old cottage there was a road going up a steep hill that was closed in the winter. Fortunately the county was smart enough to block it off every Nov 15 so as to avoid problems like this.

I’ve been to the top of the pass from the highway 285 side. You need a high clearance 4x4 to go don the other side. No go even in a mild winter.

Not like chicken - more like pork. Or so the nice folks in New Guinea say, I’ve read.

If you live in Denver and you drive an uber and you blow past signs that say snow mobiles only, heading toward a mountain with passengers yelling at you then you did not grow up in Denver, in snow, nor reading English.

I agree, I live in the mountains in Eastern California and it amazes me how many tourists here have no idea of how to drive in snow, plus they blindly follow the GPS on their phone leading them up snowbound closed roads. For some unknown reason, they either can't read, ignore, or don't truly understand what road closed in Winter signs really mean.

I’m not sure about nice folks but I’ve also read. “With the Old Breed” and other WW2 chronicles of war in the pacific. Chi Chi Jima comes to mind. White pork vs dark pork were terms I read. Rather dark thoughts me thinks. Regards.

One would think a family named ‘Kim’ to be more tech savvy.

To be able to text, but not able screen shot your location from the built-in map program in your phone?

George HW Bush nearly was at Chi Chi Jima (Fly Boys by J Bradley). A US sub got to him before an island patrol boat got him. Good old George would have been a (Rocky Mountain Oyster) otherwise.
