Rand Paul made his name as a gadfly preaching about the dangers of a tyrannical federal government. Now, after the killings of two Minnesota residents at the hands of Homeland Security agents, the Kentucky Republican has a chance to do something about it.
The 63-year-old, who spent years on the outskirts of the party, is now at the center of the Senate’s response to the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, which have sparked new criticism of the administration’s immigration enforcement policies and raised many of the same civil liberties questions Paul has long been asking.
As chair of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, he’s already forced a trio of top immigration officials to agree to testify, publicly criticized the administration’s response to the Pretti shooting and even raised the possibility Congress might step in if the administration refuses to conduct an independent investigation of that incident.
“For people to have confidence in government and confidence in law enforcement … we have to be very honest,” Paul told reporters. “I don’t think anybody in America believes he was assaulting those officers, so we have to tell the truth.”
But Paul — who is already in President Donald Trump’s doghouse as an inconsistent GOP ally — is still walking a fine line.
He repeatedly refused this week to weigh in on if Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem should leave the administration, saying he was “reserving judgment for now.”

It looks more and more like there may be some truth to the rumors of Rand Paul being dirty with cartel money.
That is a very silly comment. Rand is clean as a whistle
The fed govt can allow millions of immigrants to come in and kill hundreds of Americans but the fed govt cannot enforce the law and protect Americans according to Rand.
Boucher could primary him at this point.
Rand forgets that a crazed Dem neighbor once assaulted him, breaking some ribs.
Can we kill people like THAT?
Can't say about the clean as a whistle part, but he blows like a whistle, nothing but hot air, I might add.
The only time we hear much about Rand Paul is when he’s going out criticizing President Trump. He doesn’t get out and praise Trump when it is deserved.
Unfortunately, Rand has become a nattering nabob of negativity, to recall an old phrase.
Rand Paul is as clean as a midden. Why do you peddle him nonstop and ignore the big picture of his words & actions? Are you compromised?
I think Rand Paul is a spoiler. I think he realizes his chance at a the presidency has passed him by and he’s been replace by Vance and Rubio.
So now he’s just out there, pissing on the GOP tent, just because he can.
History won’t even remember him.
Ron Paul just being the duplicitous traitor that he is.
FU and Rand.
William Safire could turn a mean phrase.
The initial statements from Bovino and Noem were an obvious mistake but that’s it. Whether they were fed bad info or pulled it out of their butts doesn’t matter. They should’ve waited for more info to come out, but they were dying to get in front of the story.
None of that has anything to do with the shooting itself.
America’s bloated debt, feeding bloated government, feeding decades of institutional socialist/marxist thought, are pushing America into a point in history where we face a stark choice between Lenin or Kolchak, Cabballero or Franco, or Allende or Pinochet
Rand Paul is standing on the side of an Indycar track waiving a yellow flag and the drivers are ignoring him.
As a Kentucky voter, I can hardly wait to help vote Rand’s open border Losertarian a@@ the h@ll out of office.
And what isn't silly about this?
Put your pom-poms away for a while. Rand is a traditional BS politician as proven by his words, actions and voting record. Your assertion is what's silly here and it's as effective as Rand Paul is as a Senator. Go sit in the corner.
