A rising soccer star was identified as the 16-year-old girl tragically killed in a freak sledding accident during a rare winter storm in Texas over the weekend.

Elizabeth Angle and one of her teammates hitched a sled to the back of a 16-year-old boy’s Jeep for a high-speed go-around on Sunday afternoon just after Winter Storm Fern passed over Texas, according to relatives and the Frisco Police Department.

Elizabeth Angle, 16, died after she crashed into a tree while sledding on Sunday.

During a sharp turn, the sled slammed against a curb and careened into a tree, the department said.

I wouldn’t classify towing a sled behind a Jeep as a “sledding” accident.

Nope. It’s bumper skiing. Very fun, quite dangerous too. Poor girl, that really sucks for everyone.

How dangerous. Why would someone do that? Loss of life, sad.

Because suburban 16 year olds think they’re going to live forever.

Literally happened a few miles from my house. The other victim perished as well. Just tragic.

Sad. No sympathy for the driver or his parents.

Just like most youngsters I did some stupid stuff. Luckily I survived.

We used to call it bumper hiking, when you’d hold onto the bumper and slide along on your feet. One of my brother’s friends lost all of his front teeth doing that when he hit a bare patch.

Very sad thing about the girls in Texas. To kids that age, nothing bad can happen, until it does.

not really a freak accident when you volunteer for it

Up in Buffalo, we called it hitching. We could go for a half mile.

We did it 40 years ago using an old car hood behind a 4x4 Silverado. But we did it in a big snow/ice covered pasture with nothing to slam into. If the guy in the truck got too fast you could let go. Good times

Because it’s fun. Life requires some danger but it also requires the skills and experience to handle the danger. I suspect there’s about 15 people in Teas with that level of experience at bumper shagging.

I’ve done this a lot when I was younger, albeit under somewhat controlled conditions.

Angle and Grace Britto.

We did ski and skating behind my roommate’s Chevy van. Not the smartest thing in the world - but we were young.

sledding doesn’t involve being powered by vehicles.

apparently some people were never taught the dos and don’ts of playing in snow.
