That is the reflex but it’s wrong. Two power sources additional unneeded complexity more points of failure and more. An ICE vehicle that is not strangled by stupid unnecessary regulations is the way to go.
You are correct that it is more complex, but I would argue at least in the prius’ case(which extends to most toyotas) The Hybrid system enhances longevity of the engine, costs less to maintain, better fuel economy and removes several issues with ICE cars. Has no starter and the A/C Pump and the water pump are electric, which the design is less prone to failure then a traditional Drivebelt driven design.
Prius’ have battery issues mainly due to lack of airflow to cool it. The 2nd and third gens have one vent on the passenger side to cool the battery. It gets clogged with debris and blocks air flow. Very rarely do any mechanic shops care to clean this out.
