Vice President JD Vance condemned abortion and celebrated the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision as he addressed tens of thousands at the 53rd annual March for Life rally on the National Mall.
Vance, speaking at the event themed “Life is a Gift,” described the 2022 Dobbs ruling — which overturned Roe v. Wade — as the most significant Supreme Court decision of his lifetime, ending decades of judicial overreach on abortion.
He highlighted progress since Dobbs, including the end of taxpayer funding for abortion under the previous administration and the expansion of the Mexico City Policy, which blocks U.S. funding to international organizations that perform or promote abortions abroad.
“Under Joe Biden, it was the policy of the United States to export abortion and radical gender ideology all around the world. We believe that every country in the world has the duty to protect life and that it’s our job to promote families and human flourishing,” Vance said.
He drew historical contrasts to underscore the pro-life message.
“In the ancient pagan world, discarding children was routine. From the skeletons in brothels to the child sacrifice of the Mayans, the mark of barbarism is that we treat babies like inconveniences to be discarded rather than the blessings to cherish that they are,” he said.
Vance framed the march as a civilizational choice.
“The March For Life… is about whether we remain a civilization under God or we return to the paganism that dominated the past. The far left in this country tells our young people that marriage and children are obstacles… We know it’s a lie,” he said.
He emphasized family and life-affirming values, noting he and his wife Usha are expecting their fourth child. Vance joked about practicing family values and praised the crowd’s energy, including families with children.
“Let the record show that you have a vice president that practices what he preaches,” he said.”We know it’s a lie. We know life is a gift… babies are precious because we know them and we love them and we see the way they transform our families,” he added.
Vance urged a culture that celebrates life at all stages, advocating for a pro-family agenda that addresses the cost of living and supports mothers in crisis.
“Take heart in how far we have come, but do not lose sight of why we march,” he said. “We need a culture that celebrates life at all stages—one that recognizes that the benchmark of national success is not our GDP or our stock market, but whether people feel they can bring children into a world that welcomes them.”
The rally, described as the world’s largest annual human rights event focused on protecting unborn children and supporting families, drew tens of thousands of participants, including grandparents, parents and young children. It featured opening remarks by March for Life President Jennie Bradley Lichter and a blessing from Bishop Irinej Dobrijevic, with the march proceeding along Constitution Avenue toward the Supreme Court.
This marked Vance’s second consecutive appearance at the event. Last year, the march for Life speech was Vance’s first-ever speech as vice president.
