Southern California is getting a women’s professional flag football league

Get ready, Southland residents: the SoCal Women’s Pro Flag Football League (SCWPFFL) is coming in hot!

The league announced Tuesday official plans to launch its inaugural season this year and establish SoCal as a “premier destination for elite women’s professional flag football,” according to an SCWPFFL media release.

It will have franchises in all eight Southern California counties: Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Riverside, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Bernardino and Imperial. Per the league’s media release, games will be played at top high school or junior college football stadiums in each of the eight counties.

I love this game. Our Christian schools used mixed 7 man flag football for a while. Don’t know if it is still going on. One of the rules was you could not advance the ball unless it was done with the touch of a chick. A good quarterback girl was the way to win.

Unless I'm mistaken, this is one of the leagues underwritten by the NFL. In which case, the reasons for its existence are the exact same as the reasons of the WNBA's existence:

1) To act as a tax-write off for its owning league (the WNBA is owned by the NBA and used for exactly that purpose)

and

2) To stir up interest in women in the parent league, i.e. as a hook to ultimately increase NFL viewership amongst women and broaden its economic base by 'soft starting' them on flag football
