Financial markets have taken fright amid a resumption of the row over US central bank independence between its chair and the Trump administration.

It emerged overnight that the White House was threatening to indict Jerome Powell over comments he made to Congress in relation to renovation cost over-runs at the Federal Reserve buildings in Washington DC.

Mr Powell, who has been locked in a feud with Mr Trump over the pace of interest rate cuts since his second term as president began, responded by describing the action as a "pretext" to gain more influence over US monetary policy.

I can only try my best to keep up with the vast range of President Trump’s initiatives. He is a roaring, twisting tornado sucking the air out of the hapless media and their political accomplices.

It has been weeks since President Trump criticized FED chair Jerome Powell in the press, so
Powell probably thought the President must have given him a pass on those home renovation expenses. “Surprise!”

Perhaps an AUDIT of the Fed should be done?

Is there a direct quote of somebody “threatening” to indict Powell?

Or is this just an investigation?

If it’s just an investigation, is there probable cause to suspect Powell violated the law?

If so, what’s wrong with an investigation? Or is Powell above the law?

This is the way Trump operates. He keeps his opponents off balance in a variety of ways, and this is one of them. Sometimes he teases them, sometimes he trolls them, sometimes he insults them, sometimes he implies that legal action is forthcoming.

We don't know exactly what he's up to, but rest assured, he's got his reasons.

Powell did his part to re-elect Biden/Harris/Walz.

It’s as if during the dementia carcass years, that so many thought the truth would never come out on any of their corruption, especially while Samantha Power at USAID was flooding out dollars as meaningless value to bankrupt the USA. So no one needed to be too careful as the receipts would all burn up in the rubble.

Then the unexpected happened when President Trump did not go to jail, and when the bullet missed and then CCP tool Tim Walz failed his installation.

All excellent political tactics. Considering what his enemies have done to him retaliation should be expected.

Yep. This is one of the ways that Trump is unlike any other politician in the history of the world.

Remember the debate when he said, "Just Rosie O'Donnell." Best debate evah.;-)

The Fed has to remain independent of politics. Trump is wrong here. We are already on the cusp of experiencing an uptick in inflation in the second half of ‘26. Trump wanting to push the Fed rate further down will only make it worse. Seems few on this forum understand even the most basic of economics if they are cheering Trump on over this.

How stupid would it be to green light spending billions on a renovation that was a vanity project? How stupid is it to set a precedent of ignoring lying to Congress?

Or perhaps abolished? Why should a handful of unelected, unaccountable billionaires who are private “corporations” decide what OUR money is worth?

The Fed has to remain independent of politics.

This is exactly the point. Not only did Powell pick a side, it appears he was willing to flout federal law as well. Trump is allowing this investigation to go forward. The investigation was prompted by the House, not President Trump.

Very difficult to reign in inflation if the Fed is not working as it should.

Don’t believe there is a threat to indict.

There will be an investigation by DOJ.

Powell is not going to resign the Chairmanship early.

Tillis has said that no new Fed appointments will be approved until the matter is settled.

No problems with this. The system is working the way it should - both governmentally and politically.
