The move by the five GOP senators to curtail Trump’s powers as commander in chief represents one of the biggest schisms between the Senate Republican Conference and the White House during the president’s first year of his second term.
The votes enraged Trump, who lashed out at Sen. Susan Collins (Maine), one of the five Republicans, in a “profanity-laced” phone call after she supported the measure, reading her the riot act, according to one source.
The Senate will vote this week on a motion to proceed to the war powers resolution and spend a chunk of the week debating it. The resolution is amendable, which means Senate Democrats may attempt to modify it by broadening its restrictions on Trump’s power to include the deployment of troops to Greenland, Cuba or Colombia.
Some Republican senators say they are uneasy that Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) now appears to be exerting tremendous influence over Trump’s foreign policy views.
Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), the Republican sponsor of the resolution to halt further military action against Venezuela, says Graham was the driving force behind Trump’s decision to capture Maduro with the military.
“This is Lindsey Graham. Lindsey Graham has gotten to the president,” Paul told reporters last week, noting Trump’s view on projecting U.S. military power throughout the Western Hemisphere has changed dramatically since he first ran for office in 2016.
A Republican senator who requested anonymity said Graham’s influence over the president is disconcerting, given his long history of hawkish positions and his calls for confronting the communist Cuban regime of Miguel Díaz-Canel.
“It’s terrifying,” the lawmaker said of Graham’s growing influence over Trump on foreign policy.

Sorry, debate this week even!
Never underestimate the fecklessness of the GOP.
So RandFan, which, besides yiur,Rand Paul is on the list?
The Hill…’nuf said.
The Hill…’nuf said.
Rand Paul is not a GOP Senator.
He is a useful fool of the DNC.
The only real Repubs are the Freedom Caucus
These RINO’s do great damage the the public impression of the Repubs as a bunch of doormats.
Where were these RINO’s during the Biden and Obama terms?
The Dems work in lockstep like the A Team.
The Repubs lack unity...chasing perfection when only the good is an option.
Idiots...contemptible weaklings.
Gutless.
I hope I am not being too subtle.
Since we did not invade and occupy the country, the only way that Trump has any power over Venezuela right now is through threat of military action. If he loses this power, Venezuela will likely go to hell. But of course what’s tens of millions of people’s lives being destroyed and our nation’s security being hurt compared to the most important thing, forcing Trump to fail, right Senators?
Of course Trump will veto it even if it gets through Congress, and even if he didn’t, I doubt this would ever be okayed by the Supreme Court.
But Goober Graham is welcome?
Follow the money.
Typical Randiac comeback.
The Hill Of Crap
Interrupting Venezuela’s oil trade. That’s admittedly military by implementation but economic/fiscal in terms of its impact.
Ah, the good old republican’ts. You can always count on their fecklessness.
These same people never tried to ‘rein in’ Biden.
That’s the actual lesson here.
The Hill is the same as Turd Mountain.
Look at this through the lens of max corruption. We support Ukraine because of the grift. We don’t oppose Maduro and narco terrorism because of the grift. And they are all on it.
Congress is just giving hope to the thugs in Venezuela if they hold out long enough, Trump will just be a toothless tiger. This is not productive.
The GOP Liz Cheney Acme Coyote Club?
