The Greek island offering free accommodation to look after rescued cats

Fancy escaping to a remote Greek island with free accommodation? A dream opportunity has emerged for cat lovers who have some time to spare and truly want to make a difference.

The snug island of Syros - located in the centre of the Aegean Sea and 70 miles from the port of Piraeus - is home to around 3,000 stray felines.

Since the 1990s, charities such as Syros Cats have been working on managing population numbers, sterilisation and providing care to the cats.

The organisation is now welcoming 'fit, mature, healthy and independent' volunteers who would like to help with all aspects of cat care for a minimum of one month.

In exchange for free accommodation, breakfast and utilities, applicants will spend five hours a day, five days a week feeding, cleaning and cuddling rescued kittens.

Specific day-to-day jobs include cleaning litter trays, grooming, gardening, catching or helping trap feral cats, helping with medications, and taking sick, injured or unvaccinated cats to the vet.

Applicants should note that as well as looking after the cats, they are expected to engage with visitors and show them around.

They are further advised to not pick up sick or damaged cats without checking in with the charity first, as they could be unvaccinated or already being looked after elsewhere.

“I miss my kitties. I’m too old to get another.”

That’s exactly where we are now. We’re down to our last two.

“I was just thinking about making arrangements for Daisy Cat when I die.”

We’re lucky that my niece is an avid cat lover, and has agreed to take our kitties if they outlive us. It’s spelled out in our Trust, along with $$$. It’s a relief to know they’ll be taken care of.

Stray cats are (at least were) all over Maui, too.

When we moved back to the mainland we brought one with us.

My nuece will take Daisy, but it would involve a long flight and when she got there, niece’s cat might not like her. Not so good.

However, I have new neighnbrrs from Ukraine who have a family of really lovely cat lovers here. I would rather one of them become Daisy’s new mom. Have not talked to Tamara about it yet but will very soon. Her family has quite a lot of money, but I would leave plenty for Daisy’s needs.

Your local shelter might have old cats who need homes. Would be a good match for you. We have one no-kill shelter in our city, so older cats would probably be available.

Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach) looks pretty cool, I've never been there, swimming is prohibited apparently (good idea to avoid it regardless), looks like quite a climb down and back up, but wow.

That’s very good. The peace of mind is worth a lot!

If they agree, it might not be a bad idea to write it down somewhere just to be safe, and have it where it can be signs easily. When Hubby’s single sister died at home unexpectedly, she had two cats. The cops had a Animal Control pick them up and they were taken to the pound.

We took off work and it took us two days to teach them down because L.A. has so many shelters. Then it was another major event to take them home. We had to get documentation from the Coroner and one other place (can’t recall who anymore).

Apparently, CA would rather euthanize two beautiful healthy cats than send them to a loving home. She had a Will that stipulated the Trustee either take them or find a good “parents” — AND they would/could reside in her gorgeous Brentwood condo as long as the cats lived — AND there was about $1 million for cat expenses.

It took us forever to find her Will, but once we did, it all worked out. She was a sweet single girl (woman) and was able to take in the responsibility. We figured the Trustee spent some time over the years looking for twins or Bubba and Lily so they could live forever - LOL!

The best thing about Islam is that they tend to love cats. Hands down, the best thing.

🐱 Tashirojima (Miyagi Prefecture) — the most famous cat island

Tashirojima, often simply called “Cat Island,” is a small island northeast of Japan where cats outnumber people by a significant margin. euronews

About 100+ cats live there alongside roughly 50 human residents, and the island embraces its feline presence with cat-themed sites like a Cat Shrine. euronews

Visitors can still go by ferry from Ishinomaki City and see cats lounging around the ports and paths. NICHIGO PRESS

🐈 Aoshima (Ehime Prefecture) — another well-known cat island

Aoshima is another famous “cat island” in southern Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, traditionally known for having many more cats than humans. Wikipedia

However, its cat population has declined in recent years due to aging animals, neutering efforts, and fewer visitors feeding them, and only a handful of people now live there. Wikipedia +1

It’s still accessible and considered a “cat island,” though less bustling than in its peak years. Wikipedia

😺 Other cat-rich islands

Japan has several smaller “cat islands,” including places like Ainoshima in Fukuoka Prefecture, where feral cats roam freely and attract visitors. Wikipedia

I have a bunch of cats in my back yard (fenced in and blocked on top and bottom so they don’t get out)-—but my solution for the poop is 2 large areas with dirt as litter boxes...then rake and toss out. 90% of the cats oblige.....
