Truman sent the first advisors in 1950 although some Americans had been used there under FDR, Eisenhower kept the advisors and all was fine, he kept them his second term and then JFK had them, and then 1963 and JFK happened, there were a lot of crack units and crack troops in Vietnam during the war.

What was the myth about Special Forces?

“What was the myth about Special Force”

When I was there in 66-67 S Korea had 50,000 there. Maybe 10,000 of them were close to “crack troops”. I never saw anything close to “crack troops” among Americans in Qui Nhon and Pleiku (mostly Pleiku). My Artillery went out to shoot up the Ho Chi Minh trail “just incase” there was anyone there. Never met any “crack troops” in the field. Americans were a lot of bored stiff out of their minds and getting drunk, mostly because they were bored.

LBJ/Whiz Kid/McNamara strategy of more quantity, less quality did not work.
