What is oil's ranking?

shaggy eel: ,,, the paper market for silver is like the paper market for oil... the amounts contracted for any given day simply can't be physically delivered. On that basis how can the value be authenticated? It can be physically but not in the make believe trading that goes on every day.

My question was obviously rhetorical.

To be clearer: If the metrics applied to silver being the world's third-most valuable asset were also applied to oil, what would oil's ranking be?

I'm not saying that the metrics used here are valid or invalid - I'm merely asking: Where would oil be, comparatively? Would it rank ahead of silver, or behind it?

Regards,
