I sympathize with Reiner for trying to get help for his son. But when the son is so violent that the police are repeatedly being called to their house for violence and welfare checks, they need to wake up and see that he has to be kicked out and not let back in. They were engaging in the worst form of naive blindness.

There’s a lot to be said for tough love.
One of my supervisors years ago had an incorrigible son who was physically dangerous to the family members, stole from the home, etc. When he was 14, the family had to legally emancipate him and file restraining orders.
It saved the family.
