Children want to be heroic. They imagine being this child who overcomes what is described as adversarial parents to become the person that the hero wants to be.
Im traditional children's books the young prince rescues the young maiden. In traditional books the child learns what is heroic behavior. Not so in this book.
It is subtle brainwashing.
