Most people have the Situational awareness of a can of creamed corn. I’m retired LE, so I know a little about it. My ex-wife always remarked how I was scanning people when we were out in public. I told her after awhile it becomes hard to “turn off”. But frankly I had (and have) no intentiom of stopping.

My son went to a concert with my wife years ago. At a certain point he grabbed my wife’s arm and told her that they needed to move away. She protested and didn’t want to move, but he insisted. A few seconds later, a fight broke out between a couple of drunk 20 year old guys.
He is a middle school teacher. Head on a swivel all day long.
“I was scanning people when we were out in public.”
I dated a cop for a while, and he did the same thing. Not only did he scan people, he scanned the environment. When we walked into an area or room, he immediately took notice of entrances, potential emergency exits, possible safe hiding places.
I learned SA reading LTC Jeff Cooper, Masada Ayoob, and the like. Never fired or brandished a concealed carry weapon, but I’ve brought one to closer readiness in a car a time or two.
“ But frankly I had (and have) no intention of stopping.”
The smart phone has made it worse by multitudes.
Just drive around, people walking, driving and “working” have the bent neck syndrome. They see nothing but the image on their screen.
These fools will also suddenly stop in front of you anywhere when walking in public.
The imported criminals that Bidet brought in are having a field day with the easy targets they encounter.
It’s funny you mention being LE. I’m not, but have a naturally high level of situational awareness. (Came from growing up in a Middle Eastern dictatorship. ) One remark I get repeatedly from strangers in public spaces is…”are you a cop”.
Never have been. But I think there is a two-way connection between being LE and situational awareness.
