Gil Gerard dead at 82: Buck Rogers In The 25th Century star passes away as cause of death is revealed

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century leading man Gil Gerard died at 82 at his Georgia home on Tuesday following a brief battle with cancer, his wife Janet said.

'Early this morning Gil - my soulmate - lost his fight with a rare and viciously aggressive form of cancer,' Janet said.

Janet continued, 'From the moment when we knew something was wrong to his death this morning was only days.'

Janet added: 'No matter how many years I got to spend with him it would have ever been enough. Hold the ones you have tightly and love them fiercely.'

Prior to his role on Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Gerard portrayed Dr. Alan Stewart on a total of 303 episodes of The Doctors from 1973–1976.

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, according to a synopsis, saw 'the 20th century astronaut [emerge] out of 500 years of suspended animation into the 25th century to become Earth's greatest hero and to explore the unknown reaches of deep space.'

The Arkansas-born actor appeared in all 32 episodes of the series, which ran two seasons from 1979–1981, and was broadcast on NBC.

“...lost his fight with a rare and viciously aggressive form of cancer,’ Janet said.”

Turbo cancer... Could it be that he died safely and effectively?

I enjoyed that show and Erin Grey.

Dr. Theopolis and Twiki were cool, as well.

I have no idea how I remember any names, because I haven't watched it since it was originally broadcast.

I must have liked it—a lot.

Same thing happened to a friend of mine, early 80s but extremely fit and healthy. I tried to warn him, but he knew best and was following his doctor’s advice. Fully Jabbed and Boosted and then a turbo cancer hit hard and he was dead within the year. His doctor was quite baffled.

“I enjoyed that show and Erin Grey.”

Oh, yes, Erin Gray had it going on... in a big way. Likely was every (straight) American boy’s dream girl c. 1980.

The show sorta lost momentum in the 2nd season when they left New Chicago for more of Star Trek-style new-planet-every-episode kind of thing.

My aunt died six months after getting vaxxed with the mRNA. . No saying it was that, but still.

From IMDb:
Gilbert "Gil" Gerard was born on Jan. 23, 1943 in Little Rock, Arkansas, and did a good deal of acting in high school. He attended the University of Arkansas but dropped out before graduation. He landed a job as an industrial chemist. He became regional manager of a large chemical company, headed by (1967-1971) Arkansas Governor "Win" Winthrop Rockefeller. After a few years, Gil's employers said they would name him the firm's vice-president if he pursued his master's degree. Gil resigned rather than tell everyone he did not have a college diploma.

He moved to New York where he studied drama by day and drove a cab at night. By chance, Gil picked up a fare who showed a lively interest in the problems of unknown, unemployed actors. Before that passenger left the cab, he told Gil to report in a few days to the set of Love Story (1970), which was being filmed on location in New York City. When Gil arrived on the "Love Story" set, he was hired as an extra. Later that day, he was singled out for a "bit" role, which eventually wound up on the cutting room floor, but Gil now had his first professional credit.

Had been battling obesity his entire life and in his later years had maxed out at over 350 pounds, resulting in him suffering from a number of life threatening complications including diabetes and congestive heart failure. It 1988, he had a form of weight loss surgery known as a mini-gastric bypass, and by 1990, his weight dropped to 220 pounds and improved his health dramatically.

Regards,

That DNA/RNA mechanism is of GOD. DO NOT mess with it superficially!!! Actually, best not to mess with it AT ALL.

I didn’t think about it until your post, but for me the timing of Buck Rogers in my preteens, followed by Star Trek The Next Generation in my late teens, early twenties, is probably why I enjoyed both shows a lot (aside from TNG’s first season LOL). As a preteen I liked the space adventure and comedic nature of BR. Then later as a teenager who was a stereotypical hobby programmer who got a CS degree and made a career out of it, TNG was very entertaining. At that age I was more interested in the science: the “sci” of sci-fi. TNG had great tech consultants to make sure the science was good (with overtly fantasy stuff thrown in too like space aliens and warp drives).

I went to a few DragonCons in the late 90s and easily 00s.

Erin was there a lot and she was on panels and was fan friendly.

The first time I saw Gil Gerard I did not recognize him. He was morbidly obese and broken down. If it wasn’t for the voice being consistent, I wouldn’t have known who he was.

A con or two later he was back and looked at lot more like his old self from TV. He went through some kind of major fitness and health regimen.

RIP Buck.
