“There is an ongoing push to cease the hymnal in favour of having the denomination e-mail the latest hits off the radio to churches for ideas.”
I don’t have the slightest clue what you are talking about, personsally. Radio hits??? Rap??? Where I attend church, we use the hymnal.
Many local Southern Baptist churches locally have ditched hymnals (both 1990 and 2008 Baptist Hymnals) in favour of singing hits off KLVR. We have Keeping Up with the Joneses where everyone follows the megachurch. Even in the nearby city, First Baptist in the big city has ditched hymnals in favour of emotional singing of hits off the radio.
LifeWay Worship encourages the switch to hits because of “relevance”. They send the band or praise team whatever hit songs they want you to sing, and they insist you listen to KLVR or Solid Gospel to understand the songs off the radio. It’s a return to the kid’s table where they just sing what they hear off the radio. The entire plethora of hymns are not even sung. The church pays royalties to the big name music publishers, and in some cases, the Mercer School of Theology (CBF).
