Wasn’t the epicenter of AIDS in the U.S. in New York?
San Francisco and NYC at the time. David Horowitz talks about this in his book “Radical Son”.
The health authorities were (and still are, judging by the same twaddle being written here) completely ineffective when AIDS first emerged because of the enormous political power homosexuals had in SF.
It was a hygiene problem but they didn’t have the will to close down the “bathhouses”. An awful lot or dead people because of that. One of the more bizarre chapters in US history and a presage of real strange to come.
Anonymous sex with multiple individuals, hundreds or even thousands per year is how it was spread so widely so quickly. Militant factions didn’t care, they created an epidemic but they have weird ideas and purposefully acquired it, fighting what they call “sexual fascism”. Others denied that it was even a real disease, or argued that buggery had anything at all to do with the disease.
Finally they demanded that the propaganda ministry put out the nonsense that “anyone can catch it, everyone will catch it” and scared the hell out of normal people. It was all BS, then and now. They simultaneously demanded a cure, a vaccine, and blamed Ronald Reagan for the whole sordid destruction. I see nothing has changed. Same playbook.
