Without doing any darkroom/photoshop cheating ...
If you're speaking in public (or, worse, singing) I can make you look like anything I want to make you look like. And there's not a damn thing you can do about it.
When Big Media publishes a seemingly unflattering photo of someone, know that they had a huge selection from which to choose. They chose that unflattering photo because they want to disparage the person without actually using words.
IOW: You're being manipulated.
