I get the passion for standing with Ukraine against aggression—it’s hard not to root for underdogs. But let’s zoom out: pouring endless US dollars into this isn’t heroism; it’s enabling a tragic stalemate that’s crushing ordinary lives while the powerful play chess with them.
Ukraine’s still gripped by deep corruption, with oligarchs pulling strings despite Zelensky’s promises to clean house. Just this year, a massive $100 million scandal rocked his inner circle, siphoning funds from the state nuclear company into laundering schemes—implicating top officials like the ex-defense minister and even Zelensky associates. Anti-corruption bodies are under attack, with a 2025 law gutting their independence, sparking protests and cementing Ukraine’s rep as Europe’s third-most corrupt nation. Oligarchs like Ihor Kolomoisky (facing fraud charges but still influential) aren’t fading; they’re the “iron triangle” of power, poverty, and graft that’s plagued Ukraine since independence.
And who’s paying the blood price? Not them. On both sides, it’s the poor getting conscripted and chewed up. Russia’s lost over 153,000 confirmed dead—highest from impoverished regions like Dagestan and Tuva, where folks join the army to escape poverty, only to die in meat-grinder assaults. Ukraine’s no different: forced mobilization hits working-class families hardest, with reports of desperate drafts amid low morale and brutal conditions. This isn’t a noble clash; it’s oligarchs and autocrats proxy-warring while villagers’ kids become cannon fodder.
We’ve funneled $128 billion in aid to Ukraine since 2022—more than to any other nation ever—yet the front’s frozen in attrition, with neither side budging. It buys time, sure, but prolongs the dying: thousands weekly, no cities flipping hands. Peace talks? Stalled hard. Miami negotiations with US envoys wrapped December 5 with zero breakthrough—Putin’s demanding Donbas cessions by force if needed, Zelensky’s digging in on sovereignty, and Trump admits frustration over unread proposals. Analysts say no deal soon; Russia’s emboldened, launching fresh strikes amid “difficult” diplomacy.
Worse, Ukraine’s constitutional firewall against territorial concessions—Article 73 requiring a nationwide referendum for any land swaps—means a true peace treaty on Russia’s terms is off the table without a seismic shift. If that deadlock holds, Ukraine can’t negotiate its way out; it’ll grind toward economic and military collapse instead. The country’s economy is already teetering: GDP growth slowed to just 2.9% in 2024, with forecasts dipping to 2.3% in 2025 amid labor shortages, energy blackouts from Russian strikes, and a yawning $38 billion budget deficit propped up entirely by Western cash. International aid was budgeted assuming the war ends this year—now, with no end in sight, a $74 billion funding gap looms for 2026-2027, risking hyperinflation, default, and state failure that could fracture Ukraine as a viable nation.
Committing US troops? That’s the nuclear option no one wants—escalating to WW3 risks for a corrupt quagmire. Instead of blank checks that fuel endless suffering, let’s push real diplomacy: pressure for a ceasefire, sanctions that hit Putin harder, and aid tied to verifiable anti-corruption reforms. Save lives, not egos.
This was a civil war that grew. When he took office in 2019, he promised to stop the CIVIL WAR in the east.
well, then he needs to focus on getting Putin to leave, instead of some fantasy where Ukraine gives up land
Merry Christmas!

Don Jr Goes Off on the Ukraine War
“I was actually in Monaco earlier this summer … and every other car there was an Italian supercar, like a Pagani, Bugatti, and they all had Ukraine plates … They didn’t just all magically get $5 million supercars. They’re stealing that…

It's not like Ukraine and Russia are separate...like the USA and France or England in WWII.
I am hearing lots of perspectives of late that go like this:
If Russia demanded of Trump that he give Florida to Russia after Russia invades Florida, do you think he would agree?
No, he would not. He would go to war. Total, everything in the inventory war.
Ukraine is entitled to do the same. And they have.
And now the inventory is empty. And THAT is the entirety of the situation. There is no justice. There is no rewarding of Russia. There is no hatred of Putin.
The inventory is empty.
So if Zelensky still wants to fight, he’ll have to present to the populace like this:
I am sending you to fight. You cannot win. You are guaranteed to die. No doubt about it. Guaranteed death. And after you die, Russia will control Ukraine. But we must do this so history remembers us as brave. Will it change the future of our children? Probably not. They will get fed by Russian aid. They will grow up in Russian schools. They may even fly on Russian spacecraft some day.
But this is not acceptable so I am sending you out with no weapons to die. Thank you for your service. I will always remember you til my own dying day with great respect.
The real tragedy in all this, no country will ever give up nuclear weapons it already has because of defense assurances that are not worth a warm bucket of spit.
The world now and in the future is far less safe in every possible way because of all of this
This “gradually and then suddenly” thing has been put forward for 5 years by you Russian BOTS. Right now Russia is getting its rear end kicked. All Russia is doing is killing civilians at night.
I am not saying it is right or wrong. (I think it is wrong). And it makes no difference to the end result if it is civilians or soldiers being maimed or killed.
The point is, Ukraine is going to run out of men and terrirory. I am not assigning a right or wrong to it as you seem to think. It is the reality of a country that has far more men to draw on (140 million vs 40 million) and far more war machinery to chew up. If you think that means nothing in a conflict with two countries that share a land-border, you need to educate yourself.
That is a fact, not a Russian Bot theme. And if it is true Zelensky has not even read the proposal (I assume it is true due to the comments by Trump (how Trump knows, I don’t know) then that tells you all you need to know.
And by the way, the “Gradual then suddenly” “thing:” has been a “thing for a lot longer than this conflict. It is the dynamic of war. My usage of the term is nott a “Russian Bot”.prompt, it comes from the reading of history.
Peace for Ukraine, Russia, and their neighbors!
Restoration for Metropolitan Onufriy and the true Ukrainian Orthodox Church!
Exile for Zelensky (in Florida?)!
Actually, yes, I'm five pounds lighter and one inch shorter now, with much less muscle, however, the watertight doors are wider now!
Envy floweth and raineth down upon thee as if floods from heaven!!! So says 'twenty pounds heavier than'.... But at 78, what the heck? My bride still more than tolerates me. :) Merry Christmas back at you.
Zelensky would have read it if it was written on US $100 Bills.
