I seem to remember it cost me about $400 for 1mb around 1990. It was either for that or my huge 30mb Seagate RLL drive.

It was probably the RAM. The 30 MB Seagate RLL (basically repurposed 20 MB Seagate MFM) cost less. I paid less than that for the Seagate 251 40MB MFM.
