I firmly believe that Lee wrote the story “Watchman” and gave the manuscript to Truman Capote to review/edit.

Capote revised, edited and cleaned up that story and came up with “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

Capote was her lifelong friend, and he was already famous, so he gave this to her as a gift and a hand up.

I happened to be in Detroit for a convention at the time of the opening of the film which was there in 1962. I was 15. We were staying in the same hotel as Peck. I remember ‘bragging to friends that “if I ever run into him, “I’ll hold out my hand and introduce myself.”

A bit later I found myself riding on an elevator with no one else but Gregory Peck on the elevator. My braggadocio failed completely, and I said, “ uh, uh, uh, are you, Gregory Peck?? He said, “Yes”.
